Allergies and Asthma- Ganoderma

Dear Friends,

The article ”The Use of Ganoderma Lucidum in the Management of Histamine-Mediated Allergic Responses” was written by Martin Powell from the UK who is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioner and lecturer who has been involved in the clinical use of mushroom nutrition for over 10 years. He studied Biochemistry at the University of Birmingham, then acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and Chinese massage (Tui Na), initially at the London School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, and then inTaipei and Shanghai. He runs a practice in Luton, and  coedits Mycology News and lectures on TCM and on mushroom nutritionat the University of Westminster and abroad.

Martin Powell, in his article  highlights the benefits of Reishi mushrooms in the treatment of both allergies and asthma. He states that allergies are caused by an immune response to a number of things  like dust, pollens, foods, chemicals, and stress.

One way he suggests that we  can deal with the problem of allergies is by enhancing our body’s immune system through consumption of health supplements like reishi mushrooms.

Mr Martin Powell concludes that Reishi mushrooms can help trigger the body’s defense mechanisms against allergic reactions. The use of nutrition to address immune system imbalance is referred to as immunonutrition.

Red Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma Lucidum): Miracle Superfood?

The Red Reishi mushroom is regarded as the most powerful of the Chinese mushroom also known as Ling Zhi. It is considered a ‘superfood’ because it is so highly nutritious.

As a food, it is rich in protein, contains 18 amino acids, polypeptides, polysaccharides, terpenoids, germanium, vitamins and minerals including potassium, magnesium, calcium and germanium. It contains high levels of antioxidants, which help to destroy cancer-causing free radicals.

It is the polysaccharides (complex sugars) that impart the highest degree of immune support and other benefits. The Red Reishi contains the highest number of polysaccharides of all of the varieties of ganoderma. These high levels of polysaccharides are also responsible for the Red Reishi’s remarkable detoxifying powers.

Red Reishi’s ganodermic acids may help alleviate allergies. The mushroom is traditionally used to help asthma and skin conditions like rashes and psoriasis.

Red Reishi is good for people who are under stress. It is regarded as an adaptogen, which helps the body’s defenses against a variety of assaults including environmental and biological ones. Red Reishi helps to improve physical strength and stamina and helps lower blood pressure.

In numerous scientific studies, it has been scientifically proven to treat a variety of human diseases including Lupus, HIV, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and cancers of the lung, prostate and blood. In numerous scientific studies Reishi has been shown to possess anti-tumor properties. Red Reishi also helps to alleviate the symptoms associated with the common allopathic cancer treatments of radiation and chemotherapy.

In China and now around the world, the Red Reishi has a reputation as a ” miracle herb.”  It is thought to be a life extender. It is often used as an overall tonic for the body to alleviate fatigue, increase energy, improve blood circulation and generally improve the immune system. People who use Red Reishi report improved sleep, better digestion and resistance to cold and flu.

What may be most remarkable about Red Reishi is that it has the body to normalize and regulate the body’s systems and its pH balance. This is especially true when it is regularly consumed over a long period of time. This is likely where its reputation for restoring youth, beauty and prolonging a healthy life comes from. Red Reishi is said to improve the quality of the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Because it contains so many nutrients and unique healing properties, it is used by alternative health practitioners to relieve all kinds of disease condition including ADD, AIDS, a variety of allergies, asthma, anxiety, depression, angina pectoris, arteriosclerosis, candida albicans, fibromyalgia, Hepatitis B and C, other liver diseases, Parkinson’s disease, pneumonia, shingles and infertility.

In most studies, Red Reishi has a low or no toxicity level in people who do not have an allergy to mushrooms and it generally produces no adverse side effects, even when taken over a long period of time. If you are under the care of a physician or taking anti-coagulants, you should consult your doctor before taking Red Reishi.

Red Reishi’s healing constituents are most bio-available when they are extracted. For this reason, you will find Reishi extract in supplements or as coffee or tea. In fact, many people use Reishi as a coffee substitute. Oils and extracts of the mushrooms spores are also available. You will find Red Reishi available dried whole, powdered and in tinctures at most health food stores. Red Reishi may become even more potent when it is combined with green tea.
